Julius Caesar steals the show. Vain Office 2010 Key, dictatorial, adulterous, and violent, he was also a far-sighted reformer and wicked smart. In fact, he was one of the most charming men in history. No wonder writers and artists have been fascinated by him for 2000 years.
I fell under Caesar’s spell while researching my new book, Masters of Command: Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar and the Genius of Leadership [Simon & Schuster, $26.00]. The other two members of ancient warfare’s Big Three, Alexander and Hannibal, are iconic conquerors but neither matches Caesar’s versatility.
In war, Caesar offered strength and speed. In politics, he projected populism. In both, he showed the urbane intelligence that stands out in his writing. His Gallic Wars, the bane of generations of schoolboys, goes down like a smooth whiskey when read as an adult. His military achievements dazzle. He added Gaul to the Roman Empire – most of today’s France as well as Belgium and part of the Netherlands, raided Britain, and took on – and defeated half of Rome in a civil war.
As a politician, Caesar combined JFK’s oratory with Bill Clinton’s bonhomie and Ronald Reagan’s authority. Like FDR, he was an aristocrat and a populist. Add to that the military magnetism that made men follow a Patton or a Rommel.
True, Caesar came to a bad end. He grew too fond of power and too trusting of his friends, and he paid with his life on the Ides of March (March 15, 44 B.C.).
Yet Caesar offers leadership lessons in both war and politics. Even an accomplished politician like President Obama could benefit from the following tips.

LONDON (Reuters) – Worsening financial and political turmoil in southern Europe caused a surge of interest in London property last month with buyers from Greece and Spain showing strongly among investors seeking a safe haven for their money. replica watches
The number of Greeks searching for homes costing more than 1.5 million pounds ($2.4 million) on the website of property agent Savills jumped 39 percent in April compared with the average of the preceding six months, the company said.
“The reason Greeks are coming is very simple,” said Dinos Joannou, a 65-year-old Cypriot who works in the Athenian Grocery in the Bayswater district of London and has seen growing numbers arrive this year. “Greece is screwed replica watches, there are no jobs and it has been run by crooks.”
The number of Europeans buying property in London has grown steadily over the last year as the euro zone debt crisis has worsened but numbers spiked ahead of elections in Greece last weekend that failed to produce a government.
George Kastaros replica watches, 37, dresses as a traditional Greek soldier handing out leaflets for the Kalamaras restaurant on Queensway in Bayswater, an area popular among Greeks and home to the St Sofia’s Greek Orthodox cathedral.
The Athenian moved to London before the crisis began in 2007 and said the number of Greeks arriving jumped after Christmas.
“Dressed like this, Greek people who have just got off the plane come up to me with their suitcases and ask where they can find a place to live or a job. I was stopped by more than 100 people in January.”
The chef at Kalamaras arrived five months ago with his son and daughter, who are a doctor and teacher, he said. “These are well-educated people who cannot find jobs in Greece.”
“What we’re seeing is another stage in the euro zone crisis gathering pace,” said Liam Bailey, head of residential research at property agent Knight Frank. “It’s ironic that the more instability you get in the euro zone the more the London property market benefits.”
Savills data showed Spanish buyers grew 14 percent in April compared with the same six-month period and Knight Frank registered a 21 percent jump. Searches from Portugal last month were 153 percent up on April 2011 while Italian traffic jumped 46 percent, Knight Frank said.
Growing interest from Greece in the last three weeks has been buoyed by buyers looking to rent out property as an investment, said Noel de Keyzer from Savills.
“There seems to be an endless flow of wealthy Greek buyers, old Greek family money, coming to London both renting and buying.”
In addition to countries afflicted by the euro zone crisis, the best London homes have attracted growing interest from Russia, the Middle East and Far East as buyers attempt to protect their assets amid the gyrations of the money markets.
Interest has pushed prices for so-called prime central London properties up by 44 percent in the last three years, more than twice the increase across London as a whole, Knight Frank said.
Kostas Kazolides owns the Halepi Greek restaurant around the corner from Kalamaras and provides advice to Greeks looking to buy real estate or invest as part of club deals in residential and commercial property.
“There have been a lot of new faces walking through the door of my restaurant lately,” he said, pointing to the growing popularity of deals in which professionals such as doctors and architects club together to invest.
“There is real and justified fear on the streets of Greece at the moment. People are going hungry and those with money feel threatened by kidnap. My banker friends in Greece tell me about nine billion euros left the country after the election.”
Most buyers are reluctant to talk publicly, said one estate agent who specializes in helping wealthy Greek buyers find London real estate.
“With the Greek tax system the way it is, these people don’t want others to know how much they are moving out of the country or where they are putting it,” he said.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Mitt Romney warned an auditorium of college students and faculty not to believe everything they hear during the upcoming election cycle, saying that sometimes what politicians say is “not a perfect example of what they’re going to do.”
In his second trip to swing-state Ohio since becoming the presumptive nominee earlier this month, Romney spoke at Otterbein University, touching on such topics as student loans; the national debt; borrowing money from parents for your first business; and the wisdom of choosing his major, English, in a challenging economy.
Addressing the campaign directly, Romney turned to a Founding Father. “I love what, was it John Adams, who said that facts are stubborn things,” said Romney. “Words are easily malleable but facts, they’re stubborn. And so I suggest that in the campaign ahead and in the campaigns of various officers running for various positions ahead, that you consider not just the brilliance of their words, but also the facts of their record and what they’ve done. And that will be the best predictor, I believe, of what they’ll do going forward.”
Romney hosted a roundtable discussion with seven students on the cusp of graduation prior to delivering a guest lecture to a larger group. During the roundtable, one student inadvertently dissed the candidate’s college major, English, when explaining why she thinks some of her peers have a hard time finding jobs after graduation.
Romney, moments later describing how engineering degrees were in demand in his home state of Massachusetts, wondered out loud whether more students would choose to major in more difficult majors if they knew the job prospects would be better after graduation.
“And I wonder whether you get information coming into college that says you know, this course of study will lead to this kind of jobs and there’s a lot of opening here as opposed to – as you said Tattoo Inks, English – and as an English major I can say this,” said Romney, as the female student who had questioned the major quickly apologized, saying, “Sorry.”
“No, that’s alright, that’s alright,” Romney continued. “As an English major your options are uh, you better go to graduate school alright? And find a job from there.”
“You really don’t want to take out $150,000 loan to go into English because you’re not going to be able to pay it back. You might want to think about something else that meets your interest. Was this – did you – was this just sort of a blind guessing game or did you have this information as you were beginning your education?”
In his speech to the larger group, Romney spoke about student loans – loans that several of the students in the roundtable indicated they benefited from – only briefly, explaining how the upcoming generations will end up paying for the debts accumulated now.
“You look at your student loans, but you should also have, in addition to your student loans, an understanding of the federal loans you’ve got, that you’re going to inherit,” said Romney. “And that there is a party, and a stream in this country, that says Tattooing Machine, ‘Let’s keep spending and spending and spending and build up the national debt, and my generation will never pay it back. We’ll be dead and gone.’ That interest and that principal gets paid by you guys.”
“And for year after year after year, your income taxes are going to include a very substantial amount to pay the interest of the debt that we’re accumulating now,” he said. “That’s why it’s so critical, in my view, for you to consider what’s in the best interest of not just yourself, but of America, over the coming century, and it is to stop the excessive overspending.”
Last week, Romney indicated that he would support Congress in temporarily extending the current low rate on subsidized student loans due to the state of the economy.
Speaking about the need for students to get jobs and even start businesses Eyebrow tattoo supply, Romney drew on the experience of Jimmy John, the owner of the sandwich giant Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, whom the candidate said he recently met with.
Accusing the president of attacking successful Americans, Romney urged students to borrow money from their parents — as John did — if they need to do so to succeed in starting their own businesses.
“Even now, I believe you’re watching a president who is trying to deflect and divert from his record by trying to find ways to, if you will, attack fellow Americans, between rich and poor, and other dimensions,” said Romney. “This kind of divisiveness, this attack of success, is very different than what we’ve seen in our country’s history.”
“We’ve always encouraged young people, take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business,” he said.

If you visit the State Capitol building in Montgomery, you’ll be shown the brass star where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederacy.
Less than the length of a football field away (this is the truest form of measurement in my state), you can stand on the porch of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church — the church that Martin Luther King was preaching in during the Civil Rights Era, the same church where the bus boycott was organized in its basement.
The irony of the proximity of those two landmarks is not lost on most of us.
But now I’m wondering if that 100 yards is ever going to be far enough.
This week, the House of Representatives of the state assembly considered — considered — dismantling a vicious anti-immigrant law that has divided this state once again. But instead of embracing tolerance and human rights, we once again slinked back into the bog of bigotry.
And I’m bracing now for the onslaught of “How Ignorant Is Alabama” jokes.
I’m used to it. I don’t like it. Nobody likes to hear their home town or their home state made a laughingstock. But I’m afraid my home state has once again lived up to our reputation as ignorant, intolerant, racist and xenophobic.
And it pains me deeply.
Throughout all my growing up years, while my father was in the military, I lived outside the South, and defended it as the home of Helen Keller, Harper Lee, G.W. Carver, and later, Condoleeza Rice. Great minds that came from a great home state. “Why is your state so stupid?” they’d ask. “Why do you hate people?” I had no reply — I just told them about the great people — sportsmen, thinkers, politicians — who came from my state that defied the stereotype.
But instead of the wheels of time grinding forward, it looks like the majority of our leaders are stuck in reverse.
The new bill, HB 658, known as the “tweak” bill and advertised as a series of minor adjustments that would make the law more enforceable, was passed in the House of Representative Thursday. The “tweak” is more like a ratchet, cranking up the level of intolerance. We’re waiting to see when the state senate will vote on it, or if new amendments will be made.
Despite our politicians’ pandering to the basest instincts in certain pockets of the population, there are hundreds of thousands of good citizens in Alabama who have organized Chanel Dresses sale, rallied, prayed, telephoned and written in the past 12 months, begging for tolerance and understanding, and the rule of Constitutional Law.
So we do have one very positive outcome from this law — people of faith and believers in justice are exponentially better organized Cheap DKNY Dresses, informed and connected in April 2012 than they were in April 2011. Faith groups and community action groups have catalyzed a movement that has no name but many leaders. At last, Black, White, Latino, Christian, Jew, Muslim, are all on the same page to defend the human rights of all.
The Bus Boycott did not end segregation in Alabama. Neither did Brown vs. The Board of Education. It took decades before real change was seen. Let’s all work, pray, commit to significant change, so that Alabama will no longer be a laughingstock, but a model.

PGO, a French automaker that many have likely never heard of, has spilled the beans on its latest new car, which actually looks a lot like an old car. In this case Tattoo Supplies, though, we’ll forgive PGO for copying another automaker’s styling, as the Porsche Speedster that the Hemera gets its good looks from happens to be one of the most classic and perfect designs ever. To our eyes, the Hemera looks more like a modernized 356 than any current Porsche does, and that’s not a bad thing. The \Hemera has another thing in common with the classic Porsche: light weight. Coming in at just 2,160 pounds, the Hemera achieves its sporty performance in much the same way that Lotus does, meaning that the Hemera’s natural gas-fed, Peugeot-sourced, mid-mounted powerplant that makes all of 140 horsepower is sufficient to accelerate the car to 60 in under 7 seconds and up to a top speed of 124 miles per hour. Sure Tattoo Supplies, it’s not going to break any records, but that’s plenty to have some fun with. Pity us here in the States – this one’s a Euro-market car only and will go on sale early next year.

The tail keeps wagging the dog over in Germany Herve Leger sale, as low-volume Porsche is again looking to bump its stake in high-volume Volkswagen. Fireworks at the Democratic National Convention
At the close of the 1988 presidential campaign, media maestro Roger Ailes explained to the New York Times why the candidates had lavished their energies on attacking one another from the stump.
”There are three things that get covered,” said Ailes, then directing George H.W. Bush’s media campaign, ”[V]isuals, attacks, and mistakes.” A successful campaign, he continued, avoided mistakes and gave the TV networks “as many attacks and visuals” as they could.
Ailes, a showbiz veteran who has spun through the revolving door between politics (Nixon, Reagan, Bush I) and television (The Mike Douglas Show, TVN, CNBC) a couple of times, returned to the media in the 1990s and launched the Fox News Channel for Rupert Murdoch in 1996. At Fox News, he remains loyal to the visuals-attacks-mistakes mantra; all but a fraction of the channel’s political coverage hews to this rule. Thanks to his success Discount Herve Leger gown, MSNBC Cheap White Herve leger, CNN Cheap Herve Leger v neck, and the broadcast networks have largely followed his example.
To really see the presidential campaign as it unfolds on television, try to watch it through Roger Ailes’ eyes. First, be wary of the visuals the campaigns dispense and the corresponding visuals the networks transmit. Grandiose visuals—I’m thinking of those aired last night as Barack Obama pretended to be Julius Caesar at the Colosseum, collecting accolades from the people after smashing the Gauls—short-circuit even the most jaded voters’ cognitive functions. The only way John McCain will be able to match the dazzling production—fireworks and 80,000 screaming supporters—will be to perform human sacrifice on the stage as he accepts his party’s nomination.
Instead of decoding the Obama propaganda, the broadcast press mostly wallowed in it: Flipping the dial, I didn’t hear much in the way of disparagement from the talking heads. Indeed Replica Bandage dresses, the fact that the networks paid $100,000 to install a Skycam to hover over the cheering hordes at Invesco Field proves how easily they can be co-opted by a campaign that spends the money to produce a terrific “show.” The Skycam added no journalistic value to last night’s coverage, only buckets of oomph for the Obama-Biden ticket. If you can’t avert your eyes from such spectacles and the network anchors refuse to frame them skeptically, be prepared to discount the emotional effect they may exert on you.
The Ailes playbook instructs both campaigns and networks to concentrate on attacks and mistakes. Some of the greatest political mistakes have been visual, such as when a helmeted Michael Dukakis allowed himself to be filmed while joy-riding in a tank. Ailes extracted this mocking commercial from Dukakis’ gaffe, and this along with Dukakis’ other campaign miscues in 1988 helped project him as a woolly-headed doofus.
The only way a candidate can possibly avoid all mistakes on the campaign trail is by barricading himself in his basement and refusing to come out. Because mistakes, miscues, and gaffes are inevitable, viewers shouldn’t get carried away by them just because the campaigns and the networks do.
So what if Barack Obama gave a rambling answer to Rick Warren’s questions at the Saddleback summit? Or that his tongue betrays him from time to time? (The Chicago Sun-Times Lynn Sweet offers this nice collection of Obama fumbles.) Who cares if John McCain isn’t as fast with a quip as he was in 2000? (See Politico’s McCain assortment.)Gaffes and mistakes almost never matter as much as the broadcast press make them seem to matter. If gaffes really mattered, any intelligent observer would recognize that Obama and McCain have reached gaffe parity and that they no longer matter.
The networks overdo mistake coverage because 1) it’s easy, 2) the other networks are doing it, 3) the opposing campaigns are goading them on, and 4) it creates space for yet another easy story when the candidate who has gaffed can point to a gaffe by his opponent. If gaffes really mattered, none of us would be employed, our spouses would have left us Herve Leger gown sale, and our children would have made a bonfire of our bones by now.
After ignoring the visuals (or at least discounting them) and snubbing the gaffe coverage, we’re left with attack pieces. As a political consultant, Ailes excelled at the attack commercial, sticking it into his candidate’s opponent and breaking it off. The faster you can determine that the source of a network story is an attack commercial made by either campaign, the faster you can change the channel. Beware of any segment or talk-show discussion that riffs off an attack ad. No 30- or 60-second commercial can give you the context you need to judge its contents. That the networks spend so much time playing beach volleyball with the attacks and counterattacks speaks volumes about their news values. That you allow yourself to get caught up in the pissing match says volumes about you. Don’t be a chump.
